In the early days of the year, the <strong>BBC<\/strong> broadcasted a <strong>video<\/strong>, which gained <strong>great resonance across Europe<\/strong>, efficaciously <strong>comparing the effects of tobacco and vaping<\/strong>: two glass bells filled with white cotton inside simulate the lungs of a smoker and a vaper.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube fusion-aligncenter\" style=\"--awb-max-width:600px;--awb-max-height:360px;--awb-width:100%;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:60%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RisBe5sLGPc?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0&amp;rel=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:20px;margin-bottom:15px;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p><strong>After<\/strong> the analog of <strong>a month<\/strong> of cigarettes or vapors, <strong>the results speak for themselves<\/strong>. While the e-cig steamed cotton is substantially unchanged, that exposed to cigarette smoke is visibly compromised by tar and combustion products.<br \/>\nIt is also very recent the publication of a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1808779\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> comparing the effectiveness of traditional methods to quit smoking<\/strong> (patches and chewing gums) <strong>and electronic cigarettes<\/strong> on a sample of almost 900 people who wanted to stop smoking. After 1 year of monitoring, the <strong>vapers quit<\/strong> <strong>traditional smoking<\/strong> with almost <strong>double efficacy<\/strong> (18%) compared to that of the users of standard methods (9.9%).<\/p>\n<p>Another important position comes from <strong>France<\/strong>: <strong>Cese<\/strong> (Conseil \u00e9conomique, social et environnemental), a <strong>consultative constitutional body<\/strong>, being asked about tobacco dependence, stresses the importance of proposing suitable tools for harm reduction; in the document &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lecese.fr\/sites\/default\/files\/pdf\/Avis\/2019\/2019_02_addictions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Les addictions au tabac et \u00e0 l\u2019alcool&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0(Tobacco and alcohol addictions) explicitly <strong>recommends<\/strong> &#8220;<strong>place the electronic cigarette<\/strong> with or without nicotine <strong>among other smoking cessation devices<\/strong>: integrate it in the addiction prevention speech&#8230;&#8221;.<br \/>\nThe intensification of anti-smoking policies has certainly contributed to the growth of the vaping industry \u00a0observed in 2107 and to an even greater extent in 2018. The French <strong>group Xerfi<\/strong>, specialized in <strong>economic studies of the sector<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>foresees<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>a growth rate of 10-15% per year<\/strong> up to 2021, to achieve a turnover that will then stabilize around 1.2 billion euros (&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.xerfi.com\/presentationetude\/Le-marche-de-la-cigarette-electronique-a-l-horizon-2021_8DIS47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Le march\u00e9 de la cigarette \u00e9lectronique \u00e0 l&#8217;horizon 2021&#8243;<\/a>,\u00a0The electronic cigarette market by 2021).<\/p>\n<p>Even in <strong>Italy<\/strong>, after very difficult years for the sector, a new scenario seems to be emerging: 2019 led to a <strong>drastic reduction in consumption tax on refill liquids<\/strong>, and the<strong> reintroduction of the online sales also for nicotine products<\/strong>. A good recovery is therefore expected. It remains to be seen whether these revisions can anticipate a greater recognition of the electronic cigarette as a means of harm reduction by the national authorities.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Belgium<\/strong>, various local initiatives support the fight against traditional smoking; the most recent is at the <strong>University Hospital of Li\u00e8ge<\/strong>, CHU, which established the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtbf.be\/info\/regions\/liege\/detail_liege-un-mois-sans-tabac-pour-le-personnel-du-chu?id=10113316\"><strong>month without tobacco<\/strong><\/a> <strong>for its staff<\/strong>, scheduled for June. Employees who decide to quit smoking for a month will be supported by a team of experts. Since the details have not yet been disclosed, we don&#8217;t known if the e-cigarette will be involved.
