Lack of regulation and strong marketing campaigns have caused both the rise and fall of the sector. The <strong>new regulation<\/strong>, that\u2019s strongly wanted by the FDA, <strong>imposes now unaffordable costs<\/strong> for the majority of vaping companies. In this very delicate scenario, <strong>big tobacco\u2019s enter the sector<\/strong> with their big resources, preparing to win easily.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s summarize in a timeline some of the most important events <\/strong>starting\u00a0from the e-cig\u00a0entering in the US market.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>2006-2007<\/strong>: the <strong>e-cig starts being marketed<\/strong> in the US;<\/li>\n<li><strong>2013<\/strong>: the industry is worth <strong>$2 billion<\/strong> in the US; in the absence of market regulation, <strong>$15.7 million<\/strong> was spent <strong>on e-cigarette advertising<\/strong> by US manufacturers <strong>in the first quarter of 2013 alone<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>August <strong>2016<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trusticert.com\/en\/regulations\/deeming\/\"><strong>deeming regulation<\/strong><\/a> for tobacco products becomes effective;<\/li>\n<li>July <strong>2017<\/strong>: a new <strong>comprehensive plan for tobacco and nicotine regulation<\/strong> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-announces-comprehensive-regulatory-plan-shift-trajectory-tobacco-related-disease-death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> by <strong>FDA<\/strong> <strong>Commissioner Gottlieb<\/strong>; FDA started its plan pointing attention on nicotine levels in traditional cigarettes and <strong>delaying PMTA<\/strong> (premarket tobacco product application) submission <strong>deadline<\/strong> for new tobacco products <strong>from 2018 to 2022<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>Fall <strong>2018<\/strong>: the problem of the <strong>spread of vaping among youth<\/strong> broke out: in November 2018 Gottlieb <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/statement-fda-commissioner-scott-gottlieb-md-proposed-new-steps-protect-youth-preventing-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> the beginning of a regulation that will ban the sale of flavored e-liquids (other than tobacco, menthol and mint) except in adult-only stores, like vape or tobacco shops;<\/li>\n<li><strong>February 2019<\/strong>: commenting additional data of the National Youth Tobacco Survey published by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Gottlieb announced tough actions to regulate e-cigs to stop what he labeled as <strong>\u2018epidemic\u2019 use among youth<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>March<\/strong> 2019: <strong>Gottlieb announced his resignation<\/strong> and a few after a modified compliance policy of flavored vaping products (other than tobacco-flavored, mint-flavored, and menthol-flavored) is announced; <strong>PMTA<\/strong> submission <strong>deadline<\/strong> for the <strong>flavored<\/strong> products is <strong>anticipated<\/strong> at August 8, <strong>2021<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>April<\/strong> 2019: <strong>Sharpless<\/strong> has been nominated as acting <strong>FDA Commissioner<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>30 April 2019: <strong>FDA has authorized<\/strong> the marketing of the <strong>IQOS<\/strong>, manufactured by <strong>Philip Morris International<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>June<\/strong> 2019: <strong>San Francisco<\/strong> is the first US city to ban sales of e-cig; in the following months, other cities and States emitted <strong>vaping<\/strong> or <strong>flavor ban<\/strong>, encountering the legal opposition of vaping associations;<\/li>\n<li><strong>June<\/strong> 2019: the first hospital admissions for patients with what CDC call \u2018lung injury associated with e-cigarette use, or vaping\u2019 (<strong>EVALI<\/strong>); the disease reached its peak in September, and then almost completely diminished in October and November. As of November 20, 2019 almost 2300 cases have been reported and 47 deaths have been confirmed.
